EARTHRIGHTS INTERNATIONAL (ERI) - http://www.earthrights.org/ - is seeing law students for summer legal internships in Washington, DC. Legal interns provide legal research, writing, and program support for ERI activities all over the world. Law students may be J.D. or LL.M. students, but must have at least one year of U.S. legal training by the time of the internship.

ERI is currently counsel on several matters, including a landmark lawsuit against Chiquita for its funding of Colombian paramilitaries, and lawsuits against Occidental Petroleum and Union Carbide for environmental damage to communities in Peru and India, respectively. Legal interns participate in various projects associated with these cases, including legal research and writing and assistance in all phases of litigation, as well as other legal work including development of new cases, monitoring and exploring developments in international human rights and environmental law, researching and utilizing other mechanisms of corporate accountability, and helping to coordinate with and assist other groups bringing domestic or international cases. Interns work directly under ERI's Legal Director and may provide legal support for other ERI programs, including its campaigns, educational programs, and human rights reporting.

Qualifications
•A demonstrated commitment to protecting human rights and the environment
•Independent and creative thinking skills
•Excellent legal research and writing skills
•Ability to handle sensitive client relationships and protect the confidentiality of our work and our communications
•Proficiency in standard computer applications, especially Word and WordPerfect
•Proficiency in languages, especially Spanish, is desirable but not required

Summer 2011 Position for 1L and 2L Students

The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation (ACLU), founded in 1920, is a nationwide, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, with more than 500,000 members and is dedicated to the principles of liberty and equality embodied in the U.S. Constitution. The Center for Democracy (CFD) of the ACLU’S National office in New York City seeks legal interns for the Summer of 2011.

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW
The Center seeks summer interns to work on all aspects of litigation. Our Summer Legal Internship requires a ten to twelve week commitment. Students are highly encouraged to seek alternate funding as this internship is unpaid. Arrangements can also be made with the student's law school for work/study stipends. Summer interns who do not secure funding may be eligible for a stipend provided by the Center.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Working closely with project attorneys, interns will assist in all aspects of litigation including:
• Conducting legal research and factual investigation;
• Drafting memoranda, affidavits and briefs;
• Other projects as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
First and second year law students are encouraged to apply.
Applicants must possess:
• A demonstrated interest in civil liberties and human rights;
• Excellent research, writing, analytical and communication skills;
• Initiative and determination to see projects through to completion.

Refugee Immigration Project


The Refugee Immigration Project at JALA provides immigration assistance to only certain types of immigrants: refugees, asylees, Cuban/Haitian entrants, Amerasians, victims of human trafficking, special immigrant Iraqis & Afghanis, etc. Most of the work involves helping these clients obtain their green cards, citizenship, employment authorization, and to bring family members to the U.S. Law student volunteers and/or (for credit) externs/interns, particularly those who speak the following languages are needed: SPANISH, FRENCH, ARABIC, FARSI, NEPALI, or BURMESE, and/or who have had immigration class/clinic experience. Law students should also apply for a (paid) summer internship with our project through the Florida Bar Foundation.

Include information about any past immigration work, class and/or clinical experience, along with information about the language(s) you speak and your fluency level in understanding/speaking/reading/and writing. Interesting Internship


Lawyers Without Borders offers unpaid internships to law students on a tri-semester basis: Winter/Spring, Summer and Fall. Applications are currently being accepted for Winter/Spring Term (January-May 2010) and Summer 2010.

Applications are generally due and will be reviewed at least 3 months before the start of the new internship term. All internships are unpaid, and our interns typically live in the region or within a one-hour commute of our offices. As a general rule, LWOB engages 7-10 interns per semester and 10 or more in summer. Otherwise qualified summer intern applicants who can volunteer for the entire summer (10 or more weeks, uninterrupted) will be preferred.

Interns are required to

•speak and write fluent English,
•have a commitment and drive to make a difference in the pro bono legal or human rights sectors
•work well in a team environment.
•during school term, commit to a minimum two full days per week and a minimum of six (6) uninterrupted weeks in summer
•be prepared to work on tasks that range from mundane administrative tasks to challenging research.*

Michael Maggio Immigrants' Rights Summer Fellowship


The Michael Maggio Immigrants' Rights Summer Fellowship was established jointly in 2009 by the America Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), the Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law (CHRCL), and the National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild (NIP/NLG), to commemorate the life and legal contributions of Michael Maggio.

The primary mission of the fellowship program is to strengthen law students' long-term commitment to promote justice and equality for vulnerable immigrant groups. Fellows will be chosen by the three sponsoring organizations, and will be selected based on the strength of their proposed host site and project.

The Maggio Immigrants' Right Fellowship program will select its first recipient in 2009, for summer 2010. One summer fellowship will be awarded to a law student each year.

Do you have an interest in serving the homeless population this summer?

The Curtin Justice Fund Legal Internship Program is seeking motivated law student interns to apply for stipends available for the Summer 2009 Program. These students should have a secured non-paid position offered from a qualified organization. The Internship Program will pay a $2,500 stipend to three law school students who spend the summer months working for a bar association or legal services program designed to prevent homelessness or assist homeless or indigent clients or their advocates.

The ideal intern will have a demonstrated interest in public interest law and experience working with poor people or on issues affecting them. All law students are eligible and all applications must be received by Monday, March 23, 2009.

Internships Addressing Human Rights


Human Rights First welcomes a limited number of interns in the New York and D.C. locations. Positions are available in five program areas as well as other departments. During the summer most interns work full-time. The work includes research, analysis and drafting of memoranda on substantive and procedural issues, legal issues and legislative matters; documenting and reporting on human rights conditions; preparing advocacy materials and assisting with outreach to designated constituencies; Bluebooking, proof-reading and cite-checking legal filings, memoranda, briefing materials and publications.

Funding may be available through two programs: Frankel Fellowship or Everett Public Service Internship Program. Applicants should note in their cover letters any interest in consideration for either of these opportunities.
