Understanding and addressing poverty in our city is crucial to building stronger neighborhoods. The 2010 EPIC Conference will highlight six historically impoverished neighborhoods in and around Atlanta. Discussions will identify both specific problems the communities face and solutions that have effected positive change in the areas.
Expert panels will address barriers that make it difficult to get out of poverty, constructing poverty as a lifetime experience and "the poor" as an identity. These discussions will focus on how access to quality healthcare, education and housing is limited for impoverished persons and ways to open avenues for improved access. Another set of panels will address discrimination in areas of environmental equality and criminal justice, as well as unique challenges faced by impoverished women.
Because the focus of the conference is local, it will feature work that is already being done to increase access and equality in the community and ways conference attendees can become involved with those projects. It's our community. Let's strive to be good neighbors.

Staff Attorneys' Office is a central legal staff, serving the Court at large rather than individual judges. The principal task of the office is to assist in the disposition of appeals through the preparation of legal memoranda. The types of cases the office presently handles include (1) direct criminal appeals involving sentencing guidelines and guilt/innocence issues, (2) all pro se appeals, including collateral attacks on criminal convictions by state and federal prisoners, and civil rights suits under 42 U.S.C. § 1983, (3) employment discrimination cases (4) immigration cases, and (5) social security appeals. There are also three specialized units within the office. The Jurisdiction Unit assists the Court in the initial review of all appeals filed for the purpose of determining appellate jurisdiction. The Issue Tracking Unit serves to track and catalog relevant legal issues. The Motions Unit processes certain substantive motions, including those for informa pauperis status, certificates of appealability for 28 U.S.C. §§ 2254 and 2255 appeals, transcripts at government expense, and motions to appoint, withdraw, and/or substitute counsel. Staff attorneys work in a highly collegial environment with other recent law school graduates and lawyers coming from judicial clerkships or private practice, as well as with more experienced supervisory staff attorneys and senior management.

The Atlanta Legal Aid Society seeks a staff attorney to work in its South Side Office. The office is a branch of the Atlanta Legal Aid Society and is located in the Wagon Works Building near the East Point MARTA station. The staff is comprised of a managing attorney, four staff attorneys, a pro bono coordinator, a Hispanic Outreach paralegal, and three support staff. The office represents low-income persons in South Fulton and Clayton Counties in a variety of civil legal problems including domestic relations, housing, consumer, public benefits, juvenile deprivation, education, and health law. The job requires client representation, community outreach, and participation in local bar and social service associations.
Qualifications
Qualified candidates must possess excellent legal writing, oral advocacy and work ethic. Communication and listening skills, ability to work in a team and independently, adaptability, and appreciation of diversity are required. A Georgia bar license or eligibility for the next exam is required. Demonstrated commitment to public service, participation in law school clinics, trial advocacy courses, familiarity with areas of poverty law, and previous work with low-income persons are strongly preferred. The Young Lawyers Division of the State Bar of Georgia is now accepting applications for its inaugural Public Interest Internship Program ("PIIP"). The goal of PIIP is to provide law school students who are residents of the state of Georgia with summer employment opportunities in public interest, government and non-profit organizations across the state.
The YLD will award $5,000 living stipends to approximately 10 recipients who will have the option to work with one of several pre-selected public interest, governmental, and/or non-profit organizations around the state. The program runs from June to August 2010.

Atlanta Fellowship Available - Childrens' Rights
The Barton Child Law and Policy Clinic at Emory University School of Law has a one year post graduate fellowship for recent law school graduates to work with the clinic on issues of child neglect and abuse. The fellowship honors late Juvenile Court Judge and former Barton Clinic Director, Robin Nash, and focuses on building the next generation of influential attorneys, judges, and community leaders specializing in juvenile law. The Robin Nash Fellowship will begin mid-August 2010 and continue through August 2011.
The mission of the clinic is to promote and protect the well-being of neglected, abused, and court-involved children in the state of Georgia, to inspire excellence among the adults responsible for protecting and nurturing these children, and to prepare child advocacy professionals. The clinic provides multi-disciplinary, child focused research, training, and support for the practitioners and policy makers charged with protecting Georgia’s children.
The Robin Nash Fellow will work under the supervision of the clinic director and faculty on a variety of projects that will include, as a minimum, the following:
• Assist with supervision of clinic students with weekly and on-going assignments.
• Research and write one law review article suitable for publication or another approved writing project on a topic relating to child neglect and abuse.
• Collaborate with clinic faculty on research and policy papers.
• Participate in on-going advocacy efforts in the Georgia General Assembly
• Assist with teaching the course Child Advocacy: The Law, the Policy, and the Players.
Qualifications: law school graduate within three years of graduation, extensive computer skills, research and writing skills, and proven commitment to public service in the area of child advocacy.
