PAID Summer Public Interest Position


NALP seeks a law or graduate student to work full-time as its PSLawNet Summer Publications Coordinator, editing and producing NALP’s PSLawNet Comprehensive Fellowship Guide during the summer of 2011. The employment period is approximately 10 weeks. The position is ideal for a law or graduate student who has editing experience and is interested in public interest law and/or nonprofit administration. The Publications Coordinator serves as an integral part of the PSLawNet team.
Specific responsibilities associated with producing the 2011 Fellowship Guide -
• Research and update all PSLawNet online fellowship listings for use in the print
fellowship guide. This is accomplished through outreach (email and phone) to several
hundred employer organizations;
• Search for new fellowship listings to be added to the guide;
• Edit content and layout for publication;
• Other tasks as assigned.
This is a full-time, summer position, requiring a 10-week commitment. The Coordinator will
report directly to the Director of Public Service Initiatives, and will also receive guidance from
Qualifications
• Must be a current law or graduate student;
• High level of familiarity with Microsoft Excel and Word is preferred, as is the ability to
run data merges using these programs;
• Basic familiarity with legal public interest organizations and government agencies is
preferred;
• High level of attention to detail and accuracy;
• Excellent communication skills (on phone and in person) and comfort in collaborating
with project partners;
• Basic web content management knowledge/abilities preferred;
• Abilities to: work independently and be self directed, pay close attention to detail, handle
multiple tasks and deadlines, carry out delegated assignments, and maintain friendly
working relationships with colleagues.

Compensation
Stipend will be provided at $675 per week for a 40 hour work week (at a maximum of 10
weeks). No health, dental, retirement, or other benefits accompany this position.

The U.S. Attorney Office applicaiton deadline is rapidly approaching. The deadline for submitting application materials for a credit bearing externship is 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 26th. While 1Ls who will have completed all 1st year required courses by the beginning of the summer are eligible, 2Ls are especially encouraged to apply. The GPA requirement for this externship placement is a 2.75.

Interested students should submit a cover letter, resume, unofficial transcript, writing sample and the U.S. Attorney's Office pre-interview questionnaire to Cleopartra Smith (in the Clinic Office - Room 255) by the application deadline. Orlando Internship Available - Immigration Court



VOLUNTEER JUDICIAL INTERNSHIP WITH THE ORLANDO IMMIGRATION COURT
ORLANDO, FLORIDA


The United States Department of Justice, Executive Office for Immigration Review, is seeking law student interns to participate in an excellent internship opportunity during the Summer of 2011. Positions are available at the Orlando Immigration Court near downtown Orlando, Florida. All law students who are United States citizens are eligible to apply. Prior knowledge of immigration law is not absolutely required but highly recommended. Strong research and writing skills are required.

The internship offers an excellent opportunity to develop research and writing skills as well as an understanding of immigration law and procedure as it relates to removal and deportation issues. The intern will become familiar with the Immigration and Nationality Act, the Code of Federal Regulations, and immigration case law set forth by the Board of Immigration Appeals and the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

The jurisdiction of the Immigration Courts includes all matters brought before the Court by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The immigration judges at the Orlando Immigration Court preside over formal immigration hearings to determine whether aliens are deportable, excludable, inadmissible or removable from the United States. In addition, the judges have jurisdiction to consider applications for various forms of discretionary and mandatory relief, including various waivers, adjustment of status, cancellation of removal, asylum, withholding of removal, and protection under the United Nation’s Convention Against Torture.

The internship requires a commitment of at least forty hours per week for at least eleven weeks. The position entails in-depth research and analysis of legal issues, as well as preparation of legal memoranda for the immigration judges. Interns will have opportunities to draft motions that will be taken under advisement by an immigration judge and may later be used as writing samples. In addition, the intern will be able to observe a variety of matters brought before the Court. Interns will work under the supervision of the Court’s Judicial Law Clerks, but will have interaction with the individual judges. Although the internship is unpaid, academic credit may be obtained with the permission of the intern’s law school. Required hours and weeks may vary depending on requirements for school credit.

Selected candidates must pass a background security check, including a credit check, conducted by the United States Department of Justice. Since background checks take up to eight weeks to complete, APPLICATIONS ARE DUE BY February 7, 2011. However, we reserve the right to fill the position before this date.

Legal Services of New Jersey (LSNJ) expects to sponsor a paid intern program during the summer of 2011, awarding summer intern fellowships in New Jersey public interest legal organizations to rising 2nd and 3rd year law students. In past years, students have been employed in Legal Services programs as well as other public interest entities, such as the Association for Children of New Jersey, the American Friends Service Committee, Community Health Law Project, and Jersey Battered Women's Service.

Students placed in this summer program gain experience in a wide variety of legal issues. While specific responsibilities vary considerably according to individual placement, the range of activities typically includes client interviewing, legal and factual research, drafting legal documents, administrative agency appearances and, for students who have completed two years of law school, court appearances and more significant case involvement. Fellows interested in policy and research have participated in client needs assessment studies and the investigation of the rights of children; helped to draft pleadings on major litigation; and conducted research in the areas of education, civil rights, welfare policy and public and private housing.

2010 Interns were paid at a rate of $550 per week for rising 2nd year students and $750 per week for rising 3rd year students. Placements are typically for a 10 week period. All interns will participate in a multi-day orientation in late May, at least one mid-summer event (usually a meeting with the Chief Justice) and a closing luncheon to recap the summer and discuss public interest opportunities.

The program is competitive and particularly seeks people who have demonstrated their commitment to helping the disadvantaged through their prior work, extracurricular activities during school, and volunteer efforts. Grades, honors and personal achievements are also important.

To apply, you must complete a Deborah T. Poritz Summer Public Interest Legal Fellowship application. All applications will be considered in the order in which they are received and hiring decisions will be made on a rolling basis. The East Bay Community Law Center (EBCLC) is seeking full-time law student interns for its 2011 summer program. EBCLC is the community-based clinic for Berkeley Law School (University of California, Boalt Hall) during the academic year, and provides free civil legal services to low-income clients of Alameda County, California. During our summer session, EBCLC welcomes students from all law schools.

Students handle their own cases under the day-to-day supervision of staff attorneys in one of the following practice areas:
• Clean Slate: Criminal Records Remedies (administrative, regulatory, policy advocacy)
• Health: Public School-based Legal Services Project (multidisciplinary)
• Health: HIV/AIDS Project and Medical-Legal Partnership (multidisciplinary)
• Health: Immigration (administrative with some litigation)
• Housing & Eviction Defense (litigation)
• Income Support (administrative, regulatory, policy advocacy)
• Neighborhood Justice Clinic (self-help services, litigation)

The Florida Bar Foundation’s 2011 Legal Aid Summer Fellowship application is now available on-line. Please note that the application deadline date is January 19, 2011. Applications submitted after January 19, 2011 will not be considered.

Information about the Florida Bar Foundation’s 2011 Legal Aid Summer Fellowship Program is available on Symplicity. The Florida Bar Foundation’s Legal Aid Summer Fellowship Program is a great opportunity for law students to work at a Florida legal aid program for eleven weeks during the summer to get hands-on experience while solidifying their commitment to practicing public interest law upon graduation.

We encourage students to have their application reviewed by Career Services staff or Career Development staff prior to submission.

Selection Criteria:
Among the several factors to be considered in the selection of successful applicants are:

 The depth and breadth of the applicant’s commitment and experience in working with the low-income community;
 The applicant’s passion, insight, and personal commitment to public service and pro bono work;
 The applicant’s background and personal story, including their minority status, cultural diversity, and poverty experience;
 The applicant’s future career goals and employment objectives;
 The thoughtfulness, care, and clarity the applicant puts into completing the application; and
 The applicant’s writing skills and academic achievements.

Interested In Animal Law?


Compassion Over Killing (COK) - http://www.cok.net/ - is seeking Litigation Interns for Summer, 2011 (unpaid). Compassion Over Killing is a national nonprofit (501(c)(3)) animal advocacy organization. Working to end animal abuse since 1995, COK focuses on ending and preventing cruelty to animals in agriculture. The 2011 Summer Litigation Interns will work with COK’s Legal Advocacy Program in our West Coast office in Torrance, California.

The Summer Litigation Interns will work on litigation projects aimed at protecting farmed animals; most of these projects are plaintiffs’ litigation. These projects will likely employ a variety of legal theories, relating to areas such as state criminal cruelty laws, false advertising and unfair competition laws, tort liability, environmental protection laws, administrative law, tax, and corporate law. The interns will have opportunities to research new projects as well as assist heavily with ongoing projects. They will work closely with Compassion Over Killing’s general counsel.

Qualifications
Excellent research and writing skills are required. In addition, the Litigation Intern should be interested in exploring novel approaches to protecting animals through litigation. Candidates with a background and interest in animal protection are preferred, although it is not required.

The Women’s Rights Project of the ACLU’s National Office in New York City seeks legal interns for the Summer of 2011.

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW

Our Summer 2011 Legal Internship requires a 10-12 week commitment. The internship is full-time. Interns are highly encouraged to obtain funding from outside sources, as the internship is unpaid. Arrangements can be made for work/study or course credit. Summer interns who do not secure funding may be eligible for a stipend provided by the project.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Working closely with WRP staff, interns assist in all aspects of litigation including:
• Conducting legal research and factual investigation.
• Drafting memoranda, affidavits and briefs.
• Providing assistance to ACLU affiliates, private attorneys, and others who seek our assistance; screening potential cases.

The Center for Democracy (CFD) of the ACLU’S National office in New York City seeks legal interns for the Summer of 2011.

SUMMER LEGAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Department of Defense (DoD), with over 3 million military members and civilian employees, and an annual budget in excess of $600 Billion, is one of the largest entity clients served by any group of attorneys in the world. The DoD Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is part of the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD). The DoD OGC is the highest level legal organization in DoD. The DoD General Counsel is appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate, and serves as the Chief Legal Officer of DoD, the legal advisor to the Secretary of Defense, and the Director of the Defense Legal Services Agency (in which capacity he or she oversees the General Counsel Offices of over two dozen Defense Agencies and DoD Field Activities).
The Office is responsible for advising high level policy makers in OSD. In addition, the Office works closely with senior attorneys and policy makers from the military departments, and with officials from the Departments of Justice, State, Treasury, and other Government agencies. The Office also frequently works on special projects for OSD.


Interns will be assigned to specific offices within DoD OGC or DLSA, such as the Offices of the Deputy General Counsels for Acquisition & Logistics, Environment and Installations, Fiscal, International Affairs, Intelligence, Legal Counsel, or Personnel & Health Policy; the Standards of Conduct Office; and other DLSA offices such as the Offices of General Counsel for Washington Headquarters Service and the Defense Security Cooperation Agency. There are few, if any, offices that can provide summer law clerks the diversity of practice areas and experiences that are available as an OSD Honors Legal Intern in DoD OGC.

DUTIES: Summer interns in OSD Honors Legal Internship Program are given considerable flexibility in their assignments. At least one intern is assigned to each OGC office listed above. There are substantial opportunities to enhance research and drafting skills by working in close association with members of OGC. Interns will assist in drafting and commenting on legislation, regulations, congressional testimony, litigation materials, and legal opinions. Interns will have the opportunity to assist in the process of formulating DoD legal policy on high-profile topics of current interest. Our intern program also includes visits to the U.S. Supreme Court, the Senate Armed Services Committee, military bases, Defense agencies and DoD field activities, all intended to familiarize the interns with the practice of law by federal attorneys and the work of DoD in general.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Interns must have completed their first-or second-year of law school prior to the commencement of the 2011 summer intern period. Persons who will be graduated from law school prior to the prior to the commencement of the 2011 summer intern period are not eligible for this student internship program.

Summer 2011 Internship


It is NOT, I repeat NOT too early to be thinking about summer 2011 internships.



Applications for the Martin Luther King, Jr. 2011 Summer Internship Program are now being accepted. Each summer, Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) awards paid internships to current law students to participate in LANC's legal services work over the traditional 10-week summer internship period.

Requirements:
Current law student, preferably 2L. Applicants will be expected to have a strong interest in poverty law and to be able to relate well to low-income people.
