Georgia Legal Services is looking for an attorney!

Applicants will handle a varied caseload in state and federal court and in administrative forums. The attorney will circuit-ride to counties; engage in issues advocacy; conduct outreach activities; and work on various projects with other attorneys and advocates. Spanish language skills are a plus.

Qualifications
Demonstrated interest in working with low-income persons; graduate of an accredited law school; Georgia Bar membership or sit for next available exam; clinical experience in public benefits and other poverty law areas; good writing and oral advocacy skills; good interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with clients, the public, and co-workers; ability to work on computer based system; reliable transportation and a current driver's license.

For students interested in immigrant rights

The Michael Maggio Immigrants' Rights Summer Fellowship was established jointly in 2009 by the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), the Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law (CHRCL), and the National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild (NIP/NLG), to commemorate the life and legal contributions of Michael Maggio.

Michael Maggio was an extraordinary immigration attorney and individual who was a lifelong advocate for justice, equality, and peace. Throughout his career, Michael received countless professional awards and was honored for his extraordinary legal representation, astute strategizing, unwavering commitment to the highest ethical standards, and his deep passion for justice and upholding the rule of law. Michael died in February 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer.

The first Maggio Immigrants' Rights Summer Fellow completed her service at the California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation (CRLAF), located in the San Joaquin Valley, in 2010. One summer fellowship will be awarded to a law student each year.

The primary mission of the fellowship program is to strengthen law students' long-term commitment to promote justice and equality for vulnerable immigrant groups. Fellows will be chosen by the three sponsoring organizations, and will be selected based on the strength of their proposed host site and project.

Summer 2011 Internship

It is NOT, I repeat NOT too early to be thinking about summer 2011 internships.

Applications for the Martin Luther King, Jr. 2011 Summer Internship Program are now being accepted. Each summer, Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) awards paid internships to current law students to participate in LANC's legal services work over the traditional 10-week summer internship period.

Requirements:
Current law student, preferably 2L. Applicants will be expected to have a strong interest in poverty law and to be able to relate well to low-income people.

Registration for the Public Defender Advocacy, Training & Hiring Conference (PATH) is now available at http://www.pdsdc.org/LegalCommunity/CalendarItem.aspx?TrainingID=75 This biennial conference will take place at Georgetown University Law Center on Saturday, July 31, 2010 from 8:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Immediately following the conference, a networking happy hour at a local venue follows.

PATH is a free conference for law students committed to, or interested in exploring careers in, indigent criminal defense representation – the ‘PD committed’ and the ‘PD curious’. Students may choose from 12 sessions on the Advocacy, Training or Hiring tracks to self-direct their learning.

The Partnership for Public Service will host its eighth annual Public Service Career and Internship Fair on July 14 from 3:00-7:00 p.m. at the National Building Museum. Last year's event connected 78 federal agencies with more than 6,000 students and jobseekers.

This fair is dedicated to providing summer interns in Washington, D.C., students—both graduate and undergraduate, and recent graduates with access to agency representatives, and information about their agencies’ missions and available positions. By facilitating conversations between federal workers and promising young people, we hope to encourage entry-level talent to bring their skills and experiences to the government as dynamic federal employees.

Funded Summer Opportunity in Georgia

The Young Lawyers Division of the State Bar of Georgia is now accepting applications for its inaugural Public Interest Internship Program ("PIIP"). The goal of PIIP is to provide law school students who are residents of the state of Georgia with summer employment opportunities in public interest, government and non-profit organizations across the state.

The YLD will award $5,000 living stipends to approximately 10 recipients who will have the option to work with one of several pre-selected public interest, governmental, and/or non-profit organizations around the state. The program runs from June to August 2010.

AVAILABLE: Minority Law Fellowships In Criminal Defense

The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) is seeking up to three (3) Minority Law Fellows to spend up to eight (8) weeks working in a criminal defense law practice. The purpose of the fellowship is to increase diversity in the criminal defense bar by giving underrepresented populations an opportunity to gain experience in a criminal defense law practice.

Fellows will be matched with NACDL members, exceptional, experienced criminal defense attorneys, in either Washington, DC or New York City. Fellows will actively intern in the assigned criminal defense law office and will be invited to participate in NACDL events and networking opportunities throughout the summer. Fellows should be law students with a strong, demonstrable interest in criminal defense. Fellows will receive a weekly stipend of $500.
