Students will be working with in-house counsel focusing on business, corporation and contract law, with some potential labor/employment issues. There will be a little exposure to adoption/family law, but this position would deal mostly with standard in-house matters.

The Government & Disability Workers
Disabled workers got some great news from the federal government. In a recent executive order, issued by President Obama federal agencies have been instructed to take steps to increase employment of people with disabilities.
"The directive orders agencies to take steps to meet a goal of hiring an additional 100,000 disabled employees over five years that was originally laid out by President Clinton in a July 2000 executive order. "Few steps were taken to implement that executive order in subsequent years," Obama said. "As the nation's largest employer, the federal government must become a model for the employment of individuals with disabilities," the president wrote in the order. "Executive departments and agencies must improve their efforts to employ workers with disabilities through increased recruitment, hiring and retention of these individuals."

Public Interest Fellowship Available!
PAID K&L Gates Public Interest Fellowship now available
The Pittsburgh Foundation and K&L Gates LLP are proud to offer the K&L Gates Public Interest Fellowship Program. The fellowship was established in September 1999 to offer law students the opportunity to assist public service organizations located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Each summer, the program awards up to three successful candidates a fellowship that enables them to spend four weeks of their summer working at one of four designated public interest organizations.
The Pittsburgh Foundation's K&L Gates Fund provides the funding for the fellowships. K&L Gates established the fund in 1996 with the firm's $250,000 contribution to The Pittsburgh Foundation. Allegheny Conference on Community Development, Education Law Center, KidsVoice and Neighborhood Legal Services have teamed with The Pittsburgh Foundation to offer placement opportunities to K&L Gates Fellows.
Allegheny Conference on Community Development. Provides research, analysis, planning and development to improve the economy and quality of life in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
Education Law Center. Provides free legal assistance and advice to parents, advocates and other professionals on issues of public education. KidsVoice. Provides legal representation to abused, neglected and other at-risk children. Neighborhood Legal Services Association. Provides legal representation to poor and vulnerable residents of Western Pennsylvania who have financial, landlord-tenant, domestic violence or other legal problems.

Loan Repayment For Eligible Graduates
The Civil Legal Assistance Attorney Student Loan Repayment Program was established to encourage qualified individuals to enter and continue employment as civil legal assistance attorneys. Under the Civil Legal Assistance Attorney Student Loan Repayment Program, an eligible student loan borrower, with one or more eligible loans, may receive up to $6,000 in student loan repayment for each year of completed service up to an aggregate total of $40,000. Loan repayment commitments are limited to the amount appropriated for the program for a given fiscal year by the Congress and are only available to eligible applicants until those funds are fully committed. Therefore, awards under this program will be available to eligible borrowers on a first-come/first-served basis.

Job Description
Staff Attorneys' Office is a central legal staff, serving the Court at large rather than individual judges. The principal task of the office is to assist in the disposition of appeals through the preparation of legal memoranda. The types of cases the office presently handles include (1) direct criminal appeals involving sentencing guidelines and guilt/innocence issues, (2) all pro se appeals, including collateral attacks on criminal convictions by state and federal prisoners, and civil rights suits under 42 U.S.C. § 1983, (3) employment discrimination cases (4) immigration cases, and (5) social security appeals. There are also three specialized units within the office. The Jurisdiction Unit assists the Court in the initial review of all appeals filed for the purpose of determining appellate jurisdiction. The Issue Tracking Unit serves to track and catalog relevant legal issues. The Motions Unit processes certain substantive motions, including those for informa pauperis status, certificates of appealability for 28 U.S.C. §§ 2254 and 2255 appeals, transcripts at government expense, and motions to appoint, withdraw, and/or substitute counsel. Staff attorneys work in a highly collegial environment with other recent law school graduates and lawyers coming from judicial clerkships or private practice, as well as with more experienced supervisory staff attorneys and senior management.
