SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW CENTER (SPLC)

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) http://www.splcenter.org/ works to reduce the imprisonment of poor children and children of color and improve educational outcomes by advocating for juvenile justice and educational system reform. SPLC works to stop the abuse and neglect of children in the juvenile justice system, limit policies and practices that push children into the juvenile justice system, end school disciplinary practices that exclude students from public schools, and ensure that all child-serving systems are humane.

SPLC seeks a lawyer to work collaboratively with FYI’s director and staff to:
•Develop and execute campaigns to stop the overuse of incarceration and abuse and neglect of children in the juvenile justice system
•Litigate conditions of confinement class actions and take other legal action to protect children
•Work collaboratively with juvenile justice stakeholders, parents, elected officials, the faith-based community, and other advocacy organizations to reform Florida’s juvenile justice system

The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation (ACLU), founded in 1920,is a nationwide, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, with more than 500,000 members and is dedicated to the principles of liberty and equality embodied in the U.S. Constitution and our nations civil rights laws. The Voting Rights Project (VRP) of theACLU invites applications for the Summer Legal Internships in Atlanta, GA which will begin in Summer 2011.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The assignments will include:
•Conducting factual, legal research and working with clients.
•Assisting in the drafting of memoranda, complaints, discovery materials, briefs and other litigation documents.
•Providing assistance and advice to ACLU affiliates, private attorneys, governmental entities, and others who seek the ACLU's help
•Other projects as assigned.

Qualifications
First and second year law students are encouraged to apply. All law students, including 1Ls, may apply in advance for the spring term internship.

Applicants must possess:
•Excellent research, writing, analytical and communication skills.
•The initiative to see projects through to completion.
•The ability to work with a wide range of people.
•Applicants should have an interest in civil liberties and human rights.

Reminder: Exploring Public Interest Law Panel TODAY

The Career Services Department is proud to present “Exploring Public Interest Law,” a panel presentation on Tuesday, October 12th between 12 noon and 1:15 p.m. in room #550.

As usual, pizza will be served!

Students in attendance will receive Professionalism Credits for attending this panel!

Because of limited capacity, only 200 students will be allowed into this presentation. Unlike the CSD’s other presentations, it is not necessary to RSVP. Students will be admitted on a “first come -- first serve” basis, so get there early to guarantee yourself a seat!

Students seeking Professionalism Credits must stay until the end of the panel. At that time, a member of the Faculty Professionalism Committee will hand out passwords that will enable you to register for credit. Professionalism credits are administered by the Faculty Professionalism Committee and not the CSD.

• The specific experiences and skill sets that public interest employers seek when hiring a law clerk or entry level attorney
• The most useful classes and experiences a student can have in law school in order to position themselves well for a career in this area of law
• Financially speaking, the advantages and disadvantages of selecting a career in public interest law

Interesting Take On Pro Bono Work ...

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal, incidated that "the Mississippi Supreme Court is considering a proposed rule to require lawyers in the state to provide at least 20 hours of pro bono work. The rule has been proposed to try to help the thousands of low-income residents in the state who can not afford a lawyer in civil matters, according to this article in The Clarion-Ledger. There’s certainly a growing number of people nationwide who can not afford counsel, as the WSJ recently reported. But Mississippi lawyers are still none too happy that altruism may be forced upon them, the Clarion-Ledger reports. (Click here to see Above the Law’s take on the proposed rule.) “Other than perhaps the priesthood, I am unaware of any profession which requires its members, as a condition of their right to practice their craft, to contribute a portion of their income to charity,” attorney Don Lacy wrote in a letter to the supreme court.
